Lewis Uvwo, a five-star center, has committed to Providence. He announced his decision on Wednesday on CBS Sports HQ, choosing the Friars over Baylor, Kentucky and Cal.
Uvwo is ranked No. 7 overall in the 2027 recruiting cycle by 247Sports. He is the highest-ranked center in the class and is considered its best big man. His commitment is a significant recruiting win for Providence coach Bryan Hodgson, who is entering his first season leading the Friars.
Uvwo plays at national powerhouse Prolific Prep in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He took an official visit to Providence last month, after also visiting Kentucky, Cal and Baylor.
He is only the third five-star recruit Providence has landed in the 247Sports era. Along with Ricky Ledo (2012) and Kris Dunn (2012), he is among the highest-ranked commitments in program history.
Speaking to 247Sports' Eric Bossi, Uvwo pointed to the people and culture at Providence. "I felt like they genuinely believed in me, not just as a basketball player but as a person," he said. He added that the program has a great basketball history "with room to create more history and go to heights never experienced at the school," and said he welcomes that challenge.
Uvwo also praised Hodgson. "Coach Hodgson separated himself through his craft and the fact that he has always been a winner," he said, adding that the coach understands what it takes to build a successful program and has a clear vision for Providence. "I believe in what he's building and the role he sees for me," Uvwo said.
The commitment helps establish the Friars as a major force not only in the Big East but nationally. In his scouting report, 247Sports Director of Scouting Adam Finklestein calls Uvwo an "elite defensive prospect." Finklestein highlights his physical tools: he stands 6-foot-10 with a nearly 7-foot-6 wingspan and is a cut 225 pounds. He describes Uvwo as a tremendous athlete who runs, jumps and changes direction with ease, and whose reactions are quick for a player his size, allowing him to flip his hips or bounce back up for secondary jumps.
Finklestein expects Uvwo to keep adding muscle without losing explosiveness. He also describes him as an energy-giver who plays with a high motor and brings "a rare sense of joy" to the court.
Providence's success on the recruiting trail under Hodgson is not a surprise. In a tiered budget ranking, the Friars landed in Tier 4, a range of $12.1 million to $15 million. They were joined there by Big East rivals Georgetown, Creighton, Villanova and Marquette, as well as power-conference programs such as UCLA, Ohio State, Baylor and Alabama.
