Brevard County has closed a number of beach crossovers and boat ramps as rough ocean conditions and King Tide batter the coastline. The county's Parks & Recreation Department is asking anyone heading to the shore to take extra care and stay alert.
The department published a list of beach access points that are temporarily shut because of coastal erosion. They include Val M. Steele Park, which has an ADA accessible boardwalk, at 3535 S Hwy A1A in Melbourne Beach, and Chris' Break Crossover at 3830 S. Highway A1A, also in Melbourne Beach.
Also closed are the South Patrick Residents Association (S.P.R.A.) Park at 499 Jimmy Buffett Mem Hwy in Satellite Beach, and Howard E. Futch Memorial Park at Paradise Beach, located at 2301 Jimmy Buffett Mem Hwy in Melbourne. At Canova Beach Park in Indian Harbour Beach, the central and south crossovers are shut. The park is at 3299 N Hwy A1A.
The list continues with Bonsteel Park at 8455 Jimmy Buffett Mem Hwy in Melbourne Beach, and the Kelly Park East Shoreline at 2550 North Banana River Drive in Merritt Island.
Several boat ramps have been closed as well. These are the Kelly Park East Boat Ramp, Parish Park Boat Ramp, Long Point Campground Boat Ramp, John Jorgensens Landing and First Street Boat Ramp. Christenson's Landing is also closed, with the exception of its floating dock.
The City of Satellite Beach separately announced earlier this week that its beach crossovers were closed. The city cited strong winds, King Tides and significant beach erosion.
Officials are urging people who live near the beach, as well as those planning a visit, to use extra caution. They also recommend swimming only near a guarded lifeguard station while the rough conditions last.
The information comes from a Facebook post by the Brevard County Parks & Recreation Department and from the City of Satellite Beach.
